Thus far all we have known about the Evil Dead remake is that there is a director attached, Fede Alvarez, and the script was being written by Diablo Cody. The picture is becoming a bit more clear though, as now a short plot synopsis has been revealed, and… it’s pretty lame:
The “new spin” is the motivation behind the trip, with the lead character taking his younger sister to the family’s cabin to help her kick her drug addiction. Without her drugs she becomes insane and difficult to control, which makes it impossible to see that she’s actually possessed.
This come from Bloody Disgusting, who nabbed the scoop and share my sentiment that this is pretty disappointing. Taking her to the cabin to kick a drug addiction? Whatever happened to a bunch of college kids just going up to a remote cabin to party and get laid? Do we really need any other motivation?
Also, it must be one hell of a drug that she’s on, to make it seem like she’s possessed. Either way, this seems like they’re trying to shoe horn in some silly drama, and that doesn’t seem like something this kind of movie needs. I’m not a hater of remakes (Dawn Of The Dead was excellent, and I may be one of the few fans of the newer The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, along with the awesome The Crazies), but this should just be college kids vs. demons.
If anything, an angle they could revisit from the original is the fact that for the most part, it’s women who are possessed and attacking the men. They could manage all sorts of social commentary exploiting that angle. That would be especially potent in this day and age, where masculinity has slipped out of film to some extent.
I’ll still be seeing it when it’s finally released, just out of curiosity.
