Those who thought a pair of sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean was a risky proposition are likely now coiled up with the Kraken at the ocean bottom, and the sighs of relief from studio suits can fill a fleet of sails. Every humanoid with eyeballs and a few bucks in their pocket sallied forth to view Johnny Depp’s Dead Man’s Chest, skewering box office records previously held by Spider-Man and Vincent Chase’s Aquaman.  

The handsome band of pirates proved to be Kryptonite for the Man of Steel, busting Superman Returns right in the chops and cutting him down almost 60% from his extended opening weekend. In fact, the entire chart collectively dipped one fathom to make room for the invading swashbucklers and squidfaces. Meanwhile, A Scanner Darkly tested the waters in limited release, and with a sturdy $23k per-screen average, it’ll likely paddle to plenty more theaters.

Next weekend, the Wayans Brothers continue to be the cause of nightmares with Little Man, while Owen Wilson looks for Wedding Crashers cash with his new comedy You, Me and Dupree.
