Can you get too much of a good thing? Disney hopes the hell not, because not only do they have a sequel to their adaptation of theme park ride Pirates of the Caribbean coming this summer, they’ve got a third one already aimed squarely at next summer, when Pirates of the Caribbean: Fear of a Black Hat arrives in theaters.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest seems like it retains much of what worked in the first movie (but with a quicker running time, one prays): cannons, swordplay, treasure, random explosions, lots of rolling and spinning, Johnny Depp swaggering and swashbuckling, Orlando Bloom looking surprised, Keira Knightley being all scrumptious. But instead of battling skeleton warriors (some of whom apparently joined Depp’s sailing team since becoming flesh), this time our heroes and scoundrels are facing cannibals and many Lovecraftian-looking villains.
