Digital creatures are obviously not to be underestimated, as the Ice Age sequel more than proved with a $70 million take that’d be more at home on a summer weekend than the Pleistocene epoch (no doubt in part thanks to adolescent awareness from countless viewings of the first DVD).
Meanwhile, CHUD once again proves the devastating influence of supporting and promoting our fave flicks, helping give Slither pocket change. But at least James Gunn’s gooey aliens did better than Sharon Stone’s cobwebbed crotch — Basic Instinct 2 barely shuffled into the top 10. The urban roller movie ATL had all the cred, or at least almost as much as Spike Lee and Denzel Washington and that Chewy guy.
Next week is busy with crap — Mo’Nique does the sassy stereotype in Phat Girlz, the guy from Napoleon Dynamite follows up that success with the Rob Schneider movie The Benchwarmers, and Antionio Banderas puts on his dancing shoes in Take the Lead, leaving your best bet the terribly titled Josh Hartnett crime thriller Lucky Number Slevin.
