This must be the time of year when audiences have an overwhelming urge to pay to see black men in bad drag. Shortly after the moderate success of Big Momma’s House 2 comes Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion, an apparent comedy whose pedigree in apostrophes was enough to leave Paul Walker and his hounds snowbound in second, doubling the take of Eight Below’s second week out.
It was apparently too crowded in the top 10 for Double Walker, and his crime flick Running Scared barely slipped onto the list (once again demonstrating that CHUD has all the impact of a Nerf dart when influencing box office — witness the grosses for past flicks the site has recommended/whored, like Equilibrium, Club Dread, Murderball, etc.). Meanwhile, the Weinsteins were hoping to recapture some of their Hoodwinked success with the CGI kidflick Doogal, but the masses weren’t having it.
Next week offers up a little action as Milla Jovovich kills everyone in Ultraviolet and Bruce Willis takes Mos Def 16 Blocks, while Dave Chappelle semi-returns in Block Party and the teen mermaid comedy Aquamarine tries to make a splash.
