It’s nice to see Jay Baruchel, the star of Undeclared, one of Judd Apatow’s criminally cancelled TV shows, getting work. Too bad it’s in Fanboys, possibly one of the worst scripts of all time.
Baruchel and trhee others – Veronica Mars’ Kristen Bell, new Superman Returns Jimmy Olsen Sam Huntington, and Chris Marquette – are in talks to star in this film about a group of friends who go on a mission to break into George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch and see Star Wars Episode I before it’s released because their best friend is dying of cancer and won’t live to see it otherwise.
First of all, he would have been better off dying. Secondly, I have read the script and it’s an embarrassingly sub-Kevin Smith mishmash of geek references and grotesquely clichéd nonsense. The script reads like Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back off its ADD medication. There’s a scene where the nerds, who are driving cross country to the Skywalker Ranch, stop off in the Iowa town where Captain Kirk is supposedly born and have a fight with a bunch of Trekkies. Honestly, when you wonder why people look down on the movies and comics and stuff that you like, it’s this image that does it.
Shooting on this hate crime begins February 22 in New Mexico.
