Paramount has just unveiled their upcoming Star Trek game, one which will continue the new movie series.
Scheduled to hit Xbox 360, PS3 and PC summer 2012, it will offer an original standalone story and a co-op experience that’s never been seen in a Trek game before. That’s right- co-op. You and a friend will play as Kirk and Spock and try to fight some “legendary enemy race” that’s bent on conquering the galaxy (as they often do.) That screenshot seems to indicate that we can expect the usual cover-based system in place, and the press release plainly states that this is going to be an action title. Interesting.
“Star Trek challenges the boundaries of co-op gameplay with a galactic adventure that gamers and fans have never experienced,” said Tom Lesinski, President of Paramount Digital Entertainment. “Working closely with the Star Trek filmmaking team throughout development, the game is sure to deliver AAA production values, a wide variety of gameplay and all the action you would expect from the hit franchise. This will be the definitive Star Trek gaming experience.”
God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk is collaborating with Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman on the original story. Digital Extremes (Bioshock 2, The Darkness II) are developing the game.
For my money the original adventure games are still the best Trek games in existence, but this is certainly a new genre for the series. Expect more info on the game to hit next week during E3.
