The only thing that’s certain about The Dark Tower is Ron Howard’s involvement. All else is rumor, and misty planning.

Howard spoke to EW today, ostensibly about his Project Imagin8tion with Canon, but the conversation (steered by ka, I imagine) turned to The Dark Tower.

Howard confirmed the project had been pushed back from it’s September 2011 start date until  Spring 2012.  He’s still confident that it will go ahead as planned — three movies, two television series — but can’t speak to anything else, even the casting.  “I can’t really say who’ll be in it yet, but Javier Bardem has shown a great deal of interest. We’ll know by the end of the summer, when our flashing green light goes solid.”

I imagine Bardem’s involvement at this point is dependent on schedule.  Spring 2012 may find him wrapped up in a number of projects, and unable and uninterested in taking on such a commitment.    By the time this settles, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Roland Deschain with a new face, and Bardem merely being a bit of trivia on an IMDB page.

That is, if The Dark Tower happens at all.  A lot could change between now and February 2012.
