It may not have the pull of Potter or the lure of Lord of the Rings, but even the overly complicated title couldn’t keep audiences from finding fantasy this weekend, placing The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe at the top of Harry’s magical class with a respectable $67 million opening.
In its first week of wide release, the byzantine oil tale Syriana brought plenty of people who prefer politics with their entertainment. Interest waned in Aeon Flux, but most of the other films on the chart held firm with a traditional holiday season drop. Limited releases of Brokeback Mountain and Memoirs of a Geisha each generated over a half-million on a couple of screens.
Next week finally brings Peter Jackson’s 800-ton gorilla King Kong, with only the comedy The Family Stone daring to fight the ape.
