After so many starts, stops, and juggling actors, Sam Raimi may finally have a movie.
According to Variety, Michelle Williams is in talks to play Glinda, the Good Witch of the North in Oz the Great and Powerful.
Williams’ name has flirted with a role in Oz for a few rumor rounds now. Just last month, Vulture alleged Disney and Raimi were clashing over casting, and the studio wanted Williams from the get-go as any one of the story’s three witches, while Raimi preferred Hilary Swank. However, it’s possible they were all simply names on a list, and it’s been a matter of juggling schedules and seeing who would gel best with whatever man played Oz. (As if now, only Mila Kunis is committed to her broomstick. Weisz is still in talks to play the Wicked Witch of the West.)
It’s an unusual choice for Williams, who has sought dramatic and independent fare again and again. Shutter Island is probably the closest she’s come to a mainstream movie in recent years. I’d like to see her in this, if only to prove she has a bit of fun, lightness and spark to her.
