As the heaving polygonal breasts of Tecmo’s Dead or Alive series prepare to jiggle onto Microsoft’s new Xbox 360 console, Dimension has grabbed North American distribution for the flick based on the most wankable combat videogame franchise. The Weinsteins took genre-focused Dimension (and some pens) when they packed up and left Disney to form the ambiguously named WeinsteinCo.
Currently in post-production, DOA: Dead or Alive is directed by legendary Hong Kong action master Corey Yuen (The Transporter, Fong Sai-Yuk, So Close) and revolves around a tournament in which a number of hot chicks (and Eric Roberts, inexplicably) knock the hell out of each other for cash and prizes, or something. Four writers wrestled with the “story”, including scribe J.F. Lawton, who wrote every girl’s favorite whore story Pretty Woman.
The movie, unsurprisingly produced by the people who brought us Resident Evil and House of the Dead, stars Jamie Pressly, who after observing on My Name Is Earl I’ve decided is a perfect organism. Also among the competitors is Elektra villainess Natassia Malthe, rassler Kevin Nash, and Giger-designed humanoid Devon Aoki. Rutger Hauer, Steve McQueen and the androgynous singer from the 80s band will not appear.
