Coming Soon has official word that Johnny Depp, formerly the fresh-faced young lead of one of Fox’s first shows, 21 Jump Street, will be appearing in the upcoming theatrical version in a cameo. Depp was with the show, about young cops who work undercover in schools, for 80 episodes during the show’s four-year run starting in 1987, playing Officer Tom Hanson. The movie is currently filming under the helm of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs). It stars Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Rob Riggle, DeRay Davis, Dave Franco and Jake Johnson.
Hill and Tatum are two of the UCs, with Larson the female lead, Molly, and Cube will be the police chief (funny, I thought he hated the po-lice…). No info on the nature of the cameo, but Hill reportedly describes it as “really funny.” Might we see Hanson still UC in a high school? 21 Jump Street is scheduled for a March 16th release next year.
