Most
science fiction on film and television is shit. One of the worst offenders
emerged way back in 1978: Battlestar Galactica. A half-baked Star
Wars cash-in, the show featured scintillating plots such as A Fire In
Space and the adventures of Bowl Cut and Robo-Dog. The series even (arguably)
pioneered the Snakes on a Plane concept, since the Galactica had a hull full
of Vipers. That’s the most praise I’ll deliver.
So I’ll
be forgiven, I think, for ignoring version 2.0 the first time around.
I’ve come
around now. The revived Galactica has a few faults, but it’s
also the best sci-fi on television. People like to say it’s one of the best
shows on television, but I don’t watch enough TV to know. I’ve never seen The West Wing or That’s So Raven, so I’ve got no basis for comparison. Don’t need
it, though, because the show is great by any standard. Through an exceptional
stable of characters, it fires out questions about humanity and faith and toys
with the relationship between military structures and government. It even
experiments with the notion of a practical, humanitarian fascism. And it’s
still got a hull full of Vipers.
