I wasn’t a big fan of Hatchet when it was released – to say the least. It kind of pissed me off actually. Though I’m also man enough to admit that a lot of my original ire wasn’t actually directed at the film or Adam Green at all, but at the obnoxious “return of horror” 80’s throwback hype that surrounded the film. I like Adam Green. He’s a fun guy. And while the film itself is wholly unoriginal, it is well made, and has a couple great cheesy kills. I still wouldn’t call it a film I like, but over the years I’ve upgraded it from something I actively hate.
I’ve still got Hatchet 2 cooling its heels in my Netflix queue. I’m curious to see if Green went anywhere interesting with his character, but responses I’ve heard from other people have me expecting more of the same. Maybe third times the charm for Green. ShockTilYouDrop is reporting Dark Sky Films has announced that there will be a Hatchet 3, which will pick up where the story left off in part 2. Suppose I’ll need to usher the sequel nearer to the top of my queue one of these days.
Green says: “We already had a possible storyline for Hatchet 3 worked out before we began shooting Hatchet 2, so my cast, crew and I are beyond excited to see that the story and legacy of Victor Crowley will indeed continue. For a little indie movie that I dreamt up when I was just eight years old, it has been absolutely surreal to watch it turn into a modern-day slasher franchise.”
Hey, Adam Green, I’ve got a great idea for Hatchet 3. Make it a cross-over adaptation with Gary Paulsen’s Newbery-honored young adult classic, Hatchet! Just swap out the Canadian wilderness for the bayou, and make the character of Brian Robeson slightly older so Zac Efron or someone can play him (great way to pull in the tweener Twilight crowd!).
When the pilot of the small plane carrying 17-year-old Brian Robeson to meet his father suffers a heart attack, the plane crash lands in the swamps of Louisiana. With only the hatchet his mother gave him before take off to defend himself, Brian soon encounters the supernatural bayou retard Victor Crowley. Who will come out on top?! Hatchet vs Hatchet! Eh?! Gold! You’re welcome.
