Everyone loves the devil! Or maybe they’re just looking for a few scares. Either way, the horror genre continues to be reliable for strong opening weekends as evidenced by the $30 million take for the spooker The Exorcism of Emily Rose, which gave Transporter 2 a couple of flat tires and left it on the curb behind The 40 Year Old Virgin.
Meanwhile, Sam Jackson’s quality control when selecting projects doesn’t seem to extend beyond "Did the check clear?", and so the odd-couple comedy The Man lands a sixth place finish. Outside the top 10, the drama An Unfinished Life and the Elijah Wood gang flick Green Street Hooligans both had strong per-screen averages in limited release. And who says penguins are the only ones with legs this year? Wedding Crashers is one of the few films to cross the $200 million mark in 2005, while Four Brothers and Red Eye still slowly generate cake.
Next week, Reese Witherspoon is a ghost in Just Like Heaven and Nic Cage wants you to buy guns in Lord of War, while low-budget frighteners Cry Wolf and Venom vie for dollars.
