The composition of a score is one of the most important aspects of filmmakings. I would fight you tooth and nail if you disprove of this theory. I’ve been a fan of film scores for as long as I’ve remembered, and this column will be devoted to the film, TV, or video game related tracks that have been playing in my mind for the past week. So sit back, relax, and prepare for some awesome music.
This Week: “We Ride, Really!” From the film Rango (composed by Hans Zimmer)
The Overall Soundtrack: In my review of Rango at TheMoviePool, I claimed that the soundtrack was one of the few disappointing aspects of the film. But then I actually listened to the score on its own, and I quickly admitted how much of an idiot I was. The score is pretty badass, and has been playing in my iPod all week. Well its not the best Hans Zimmer has to offer, its an addicting change of pace for one of Hollywood’s best composers.
Why This Track: This track encompasses pretty much all the good qualities of the film. It’s clearly Western inspired, but has an identity all of its own. It’s epic, grand, and could easily fit in with classic Western scores of old. And damn could that owl use an electric guitar!
Used When: Rango and his posse head out to capture the bank robbers. The blazing sun in the background really makes this one of the most memorable scenes of the film.
Also See The Score To: Pirates of the Caribbean, Raising Arizona, and any score from Ennio Morricone.
