The Pitch

“We’re swamped with overgrown Mickey Mouse Club kids. Give ’em some work or it’s gonna be Bobby Driscoll all over again.“

The Humans

Raven (That’s So Raven), Anneleise van der Pol (That’s So Raven), Orlando Brown (That’s So Raven), T’Keyah Crystal Keymah (In Living Color), Rondell Sheridan (Deadtime Stories)

The Nutshell

Raven (Raven) is one of those sitcom kids with bland parents, a bratty sibling, a goofy-but-sweet best friend and a troublemaker best friend. What makes this show different? Every now and then, the camera zooms into a horrifying closeup and she gets a random psychic vision of the immediate future. Wackiness ensues. No nuclear holocausts, no unsolved murders, no drowning hockey players. Just wackiness. Interminable, mirthless wackiness.

"`Prophet!’ said I, `thing of evil! – prophet still, if bird or devil!"

The Package

Four 3rd-season episodes: #56, Art Breaker; #65/66, Country Cousins parts 1 & 2; and an unaired treasure—you guessed it—the legendary, mythic, sleep-inducing The Grill Next Door. 1.33 standard video. If you’ve never heard a laugh track in Dolby 5.1, this is your chance. And it wouldn’t be Disney DVD without the old reliable forced-trailer block, would it? Heavily-scripted extras include a look at the show’s makeup effects, and a ‘commentary’ that’s more like a commercial.

"Mr Skywalker? You dropped something."

The Lowdown

This may come as a surprise to both of you who read my generally positive review of Phil of the Future last week, but I am not the target audience for this show. Now, I don’t have anything against sitcoms. It’s not like I’m asking for a big three-part season-ender where Raven resolves to take down Martin Sheen for the sake of generations yet unborn, all the while disguised as Herbert Lom. Or maybe I am. The point is, I DIDN’T LAUGH ONCE WATCHING THIS THING.

"What has it got in its diaperses?"

And that’s only because the stock-footage exteriors have some nice shots of San Francisco. Peace out.
