Entertainment Weekly is populous fast food media. Now and then, sandwiched between four-page spreads on The Bachelor and Justin Bieber, there will be something unique, even meaty. But generally speaking the magazine is only a moderate step above People. There’s nothing wrong with that. It does what it does and serves who it serves (it is my ideal bathroom reading material). Point being, obviously the notion that the EW team has selected the “25 Greatest Working Directors” is going to be met with dubious eye-rolling by anyone who actually gives a shit. But my favorite thing about lists, even bad lists, is that they spark debate and conversation. So in the interests of a good ol’ Thursday debate, I present to you the 25 Greatest Working Directors, by decree of EW:
25. Wes Anderson
24. Mike Leigh
23. Brad Bird
22. J.J. Abrams
21. Spike Lee
20. Edgar Wright
19. Peter Jackson
18. James Cameron
17. David Lynch
16. David O. Russell
15. Kathryn Bigelow
14. Danny Boyle
13. Roman Polanski
12. Guillermo del Toro
11. Paul Thomas Anderson
10. Pedro Almodóvar
9. Clint Eastwood
8. Terrence Malick
7. Quentin Tarantino
6. Joel & Ethan Coen
5. Darren Aronofsky
4. Martin Scorsese
3. Steven Spielberg
2. Christopher Nolan
1. David Fincher
So Chewers… what glaring omissions do you see? And importantly, who would you bump from the list to make room for said omissions?
