Warner Bros has been trying to remake Logan’s Run for years. We’ve seen a lot of really good names shuffle in and out of the door. The last version had Carl Erik Rinsch directing, and Alex Garland handling the screenplay duties.
The Garland script remains (and it should tap perfectly into his sci-fi sensibilities), but there’s been a changing of the talent. Now Deadline reports that Nicolas Winding Refn will be directing, and Ryan Gosling will star. They really dug each other on Drive, apparently, and want to work together again.
Honestly, if you are going to remake Logan’s Run, this is the way to do it. Refn is a master of atmosphere. I wasn’t a big fan of his last, Valhalla Rising, but it had eeriness in spades. If he can turn that crawling sense of unseen eyes to Logan’s Run, it will be well worth watching.
I seem to be the only girl in the world who doesn’t have a thing for Ryan Gosling, but he’s a very good actor. He’s the kind of talent you want at the heart of a thoughtful sci-fi piece, especially if Sam Rockwell has already tread this territory.
I remain curious about this one. There’s enough dark differences between the novel and the film that a new Logan’s Run could tap into a unique and fresh interpretation. Personally, I’m hoping Garland radically changed it, and the title just is a buzzword, but we shall see.
