Ricky Gervais pushed some buttons and pissed off the people who should have known better when they hired a brutally blunt and opinionated comedian to be their host. He did his job. He did what he gets paid for and now their collective vaginas are sore.
Apparently he’s been banned from hosting the show again. Which isn’t really a punishment but a gift. But, the additional text shared by Popeater infuriates me:
“Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure,” a member of the HFPA tells me, adding that Gervais’ relentlessly mean shtick could have even larger consequences. “For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain.”
The Golden Globes are fun and I’m sure the folks who get nominated and win are very proud, despite the show’s super inflated sense of importance. It’s sort of a bore. But the above is much more offensive than anything Ricky said. And let’s face it, did he really say anything people aren’t pretty sure of or at least THINKING?
No. Everything he’s said is either based on common belief, widespread rumor, or fun water cooler debate material.
They’re actually saying that if Ricky Gervais makes a masterpiece that they won’t nominate him? Because he hurt their feelings? They won’t nominate his work because people complained about what he said on a Hollywood awards show? Really?
Roman Polanski won a Golden Globe two years after his sexual assault case.
