Duncan Jones has always been an enthusiastic tweeter, so those who follow his feed were treated this last september to an abrupt bit of delightful news- a confirmation that rockstar composer Clint Mansell would be striking up the band for Jone’s Source Code. You can read that here (and catch some cool Moon sketches he tweeted earlier), and if you’re behind on the film itself, catch our trailer breakdown here.
Back to the world of tweets though… for those who follow Jones a similarly abrupt, but much more disappointing, surprise tweet appeared yesterday stating that Clint Mansell would not be scoring the film…
…which is a real bummer. Devin at his new home, Badass Digest, was out ahead of the news, but it soon came from the horse’s mouth via twitter, followed by a few conversational responses to his followers…
That “talented young guy” has worked on a ton of big (great sounding) films as a conductor, engineer, and additional composer but this will be his first feature-length narrative film score. If you want to get a taste of his Chris Bacon’s talent though, you need only look as far as the wonderful Disney doc Waking Sleeping Beauty, for which he provided the music.
So it’s the ole twitter renege… I guess we can expect more of this as we’re all given outlets to express excitement just a little prematurely. When you’re still a new filmmaker I can only imagine how tough it is to keep quiet about news as awesome as Mansell scoring your film, so I can’t blame Jones at all- it’s definitely a bummer though. Bacon does seem like a solid replacement- a composer really ready to move up to doing full features. We already know Clint is brilliant, so maybe this switcharoo will mean we end up netting another great composer out of the whole deal. Not a bad arrangement…
This is a good warning for those that like to stay connected to our favorite artists in real-time though: believe it when you see (hear) it!
