Sure, Guillermo Del Toro is hard at work on that At The Mountains of Madness film, but he’s also working on a videogame that deals with people losing their minds.

inSANE (their capitalization) is the name of the project, and a tiny teaser trailer just premiered at this weekend’s Spike TV Videogame awards. It doesn’t really offer much but the feeling of the game, and some hope that it will be as scary as they’re trying.

THQ has announced that this will actually be a trilogy of games that will be developed by Volition Inc., the guys behind Saints Row and Red Faction.

“With this new series of videogames, I want to take players to a place they have never seen before, where ever single action makes them question their own senses of morality and reality,” said del Toro in a press release. “THQ and Volition, Inc. are equally excited to make this vision of a completely new game universe into a reality.”

Here comes the drop- the game’s not planned to release till 2013. Expect the first chapter to hit PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

BONUS SANITY-WRECKING GAME RECOMMENDATIONS!

Can’t wait to play a game where your biggest foe is your own mind? Here’s three games you can and should pick up ASAP.

Sanitarium

The classic adventure game. You play a guy who wakes up in an asylum after a car accident with bandages all over your face, with no idea how you got there or who you really are. Each level is a trip into the man’s mind and it just gets more and more depraved. I picked it up from GoG recently and found out that’s it’s still as effective now as when it was released back in 1998. Creepy as hell with some fantastic environments and solid voice acting, definitely holds a special little place in my twisted heart.

Arkham Horror

A board game that will take over your life (and devour your dining room table). You play one of a number of investigators who have noticed strange things going on in 1920s Arkham- cult members and monsters appearing, and gates to other worlds. You either go on your own or band together with other people to seal them and save the town. The game’s notorious for being overly complex but it really isn’t- once you get things in motion (and set everything up) it’s quite simple to dive into. Winning, however, is another thing entirely. Most likely, a Great Old One will awaken in Arkham and consume your poor characters. But that’s half the fun! Pick this up and pick up a spare table to be able to hold the damn thing.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

This might just be the scariest videogame I’ve ever played. Scarier even than Fatal Frame or the first Silent Hill. It just came out in September but I haven’t been able to beat it because I refuse to play it except in the dark, and it’s doing such a great job of freaking me out that I can’t play it for long. The atmosphere is almost too much- little sound constantly echo around you, you start having visions and seeing things, and just wait till you have to hide in the dark from enemies…

See the official site and play it at night with the surround sound cranked, if you’ve got the guts.
