I talked to Jody Hill a couple weeks back, and when we talked about the second season, he was very clear that they wanted one more go-around to chart where and what Kenny Powers is up to on his slow and steady decline. Today HBO granted him that wish. Both Eastbound and Down and Bored to Death are going for three seasons.
Eastbound and Down has charted a steady following, from both fans of sick comedies, and sports nuts who recognize Kenny Powers’s hubris as part and parcel with the industry. Ironically, none of the creative team on board think much of sports. This season has shown Kenny in Mexico, where his fortunes have been mixed, but the last episode hinted at where the show is going for its conclusion. Everyone involved have talked about this as a trilogy, so the end of this season may yet resemble Empire Strikes Back.
I like Bored to Death, though it hasn’t received as much pop-culture adulation. I doubt anyone’s tattooed Jason Schwartzman’s main character Jonathan Ames on their arm, but it’s a smart yet silly pot comedy show that has great work from Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis. When I talked to Schwartzman he said he wanted to do more, but was nervous that the show wouldn’t get picked up. It did. Excellent. So basically, you have no reason to cancel your HBO, at least not for another year or so.
Random Kenny Powers Quote to round it out: “There is one image in my life that consistently makes me happy no matter
when I think about it. And that image, that one image is your big tits.”
