A whitesploitation film that’s kind of like Cronenberg’s Crash without the erections. Or with the erections, but without full release.
I should hate this, but actually found it to be pretty enjoyable. You’ve got a great cast (Though I could’ve used a little more John C Reilly), a solid script (Courtesy of Robert “Fucking” Towne), and some intense action. I like that it goes into the details of how someone would go about making their car, and finding sponsorship. They cheated a bit by having Tom Cruise’s character not be a straight up southerner, but I gotta admit that it helped me get into the movie.
Following Black Rain, the Scotts use Hans Zimmer a lot. Am I the only one who’s not really impressed? I found the score to this to be painful, but maybe that’s just my head trip.
Sweet N Low scene is the precursor to the infamous Animal Crackers scene from Armageddon.
One of the greatest “Goofy Freeze Frame” endings of all time.

THELMA & LOUISE (1991)

Meanwhile, Sir Ridley makes a chicksploitation movie. I’d never seen this one before doing the marathon; Strange film. It goes from slapstick, to rape scenes.
Not really sure what all the hype is about for this one. Is it because of the so called feminist leanings? Yeah, chicks with guns are cool, but the two leads are kind of idiots, also. Although, none of the characters in this movie appear to be too bright.
This time Hans Zimmer’s score is backed by an equally atrocious soundtrack of pop shit. Good lord.
I feel like I’m starting to understand Ridley now. I really don’t think that he has a clear vision of what he wants in his head when he starts. I think that he just figures it out as he goes. His instincts are fairly solid. but it’s why he has such messy movies, with crazy tonal shifts. This is the perfect example of that style.
