It’s pretty transparent this series is getting a new jump start only in a continuing effort to drink Activision’s milkshake, one I support wholeheartedly, but to give the devil their due, part of the…I suppose “charm” would be the only appropriate word…of Modern Warfare is their willingness to go as close to the deep end as they can without jumping. That game’s flaw wasn’t that it was unrealistic, but that it was just too damn short, while retreading too much of MW1‘s ground. And like most games where the creators are aiming for staunch realism, this thing runs a danger of being utterly unengaging. But, there’s a crowd for that. I’m just not part of it. Give me my random nuclear explosions in major cities any day.

From all reports, everything that was wrong with the still-enjoyable Scribblenauts from last year–primarily, moving the main character being a bitch, and strange word restrictions popping up at times–has been fixed, plus the fact that adjectives can now be used. So, what you’re saying is now, it’s a perfect game? That’s all they had to say. “Now, it’s perfect.”

DEAD SPACE: IGNITION

Between this and Dead Rising 2, I gotta hand it to game developers for finding new ways of whetting our appetites for upcoming titles without blowing any of the main game’s money shots in the process. It’s a process that’s been a long time coming, but the tech has finally caught up. The studios get to be creative without taking anything or anyone from polishing the main game, we get more playtime in an established universe and as a result, give the studios more money. In this case, Ignition is basically Hotel Dusk in space, written by one of the guys behind the surprisingly decent Dead Space comics, and unlocks content in Dead Space 2 when it happens. Everyone wins.

So, let’s just do some simple math here. Taking the PSP title out of the equation, four Rock Band games released since 2007. With this pack, they cross the milestone of having released over two THOUSAND songs. And that’s not counting the steadily increasing Rock Band Network stuff or Beatles Rock Band. By comparison, there’s seven Guitar Hero games released in the same time period, and the combined total of all the DLC released on all of them doesn’t even come within spitting distance of a quarter of that. And they celebrate by releasing another fully playable Jimi Hendrix album. Arguably THE Jimi Hendrix album.

Harmonix is awesome. They deserve to keep doing what they do for years to come. I’ll be giving them yet more of my money within the next three weeks to support that very cause.
