Heat Vision is reporting that Tomas Alfredson of Let the Right One In fame is going to be directing Larklight, a Di Novi Pictures flick for Warner Bros.
The 2006 young adult novel was written by Philip Reeve and illustrated by David Wyatt, and tells the story of an alternate Victorian era universe where mankind has been exploring space for over a hundred years. The main characters are a brother and sister duo who team together with a group of space pirates to help save the world from destruction from gigantic white space spiders. Larklight is the name of the family’s house, a huge, space-faring mansion.
Larklight is the first of a trilogy, so you know Warner Bros has high hopes for this one. When Di Novi Pictures optioned the rights for the studio back in 2008 the film was originally supposed to be directed by Shekhar Kapur (Bandit Queen, Elizabeth)- quite interesting to see them looking to these talented foreign directors.
Steve Knight (Eastern Promises) is rewriting the script from the 2008 version. Di Novi Pictures’ Denise Di Novi is producing, with Alison Greenspan executive producing. Of course this won’t be Alfredson’s first English-language film- the title that holds this distinction is his espionage flick Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy, which recently began production with an absolutely incredible cast including Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Jared Harris and Ciaran Hinds.
Check the official Larklight website for more, and expect much more on both of these exciting projects as we hear them!
