Coming Soon has word that Kevin Feige has discussed the possibility of having ScarJo re-reprise her character of Natasha “Black Widow” Romanoff in a solo adventure sometime not too long after the Avengers movie comes out. “We’ve already started discussions with Scarlett about the idea of a solo movie and have begun putting together concepts,” said Feige in a press conference for the Iron Man 2 Blu-ray/DVD, “but The Avengers comes first.” The transcript of the DVD discussion is over at SuperHeroHype.
For the record, I liked Johansson in the role. Unbelievably sexy in that catsuit and she handled the physicality well. The Widow is a character that has really gotten around in the Marvel Universe. She’s spent time with a lot of organizations and um, superheroes. Her recent revamping in Ultimate Avengers gave the character some new life. But my personal favorite depiction of her was around the late ’70s during her SHIELD employment and in the blue catsuit (screw the grey one) with the longer hair. I’m glad that’s the look Favreau went with.
Female comic book movies haven’t a great track record lately. But now that Marvel has begun centralizing things more, hopefully a bit of real consideration will be put into this one. An origin story is probably a safe bet. I just hope they keep things more in the real than dragging in every third tier Russian superhero. One whiff of Ursa Major and this whole thing could go south.
