Sons of Anarchy: Season Two was when the SAMCRO crew finally saw a true threat on the horizon. The LOAN Club was moving in on their heroin operation, while taking shots at the club’s internal operations. Katey Sagal continued to prove that the Emmys don’t mean shit, as she continues to deliver the work of her lifetime as Gemma. Henry Rollins owned all this season as white supremacist AJ Weston. Yet, he continues the streak of guest actors that blow Charlie Hunnam off the map. Since LOST went off the air, Hunnam seems to have inherited that weak link in an ensemble position from Evangeline Lilly.

  • The Red Riding Trilogy was pushed on me for months until I finally sat down to watch it. What I saw was another glowing example of Channel 4’s expert ability to adapt projects that would flounder in America. The trilogy was released on a limited screen basis to American arthouse theaters earlier this year. So, I’m expecting that the Blu-Ray/DVD bow will be the first taste for many Chewers. While there are a bulk of exclusive supplemental material on the DVD/Blu-Ray. I’d recommend checking each film out on Netflix Instant View first. Get a feel of the movies and see if they match what you’re expecting from period crime drama. That being said, if you like it…pick up the Blu-Ray. The HD transfers shine as some of the best 1080 presentations I’ve seen in 2010. Sure, 1983 holds up better since it was shot on the RED camera. But, 1974 and 1980 look amazing for being shot on period appropriate film stocks.

The Evil Dead has arrived on Blu-Ray. It looks pretty amazing, but there are still some sore spots that seem to be a part of the original film negative. The release is being touted as having a Limited Edition bonus disc of special features. However, if you already have the three-disc bound DVD Special Edition from 2008/2009, you’ve already seen those supplemental features. There is a new commentary on the first disc from the Trio of Shemps, but it’s really just more of the same. If there’s interest in a visual breakdown for the film’s Blu-Ray bow, I can work up an additional look at the title for later this week.

Harry Brown proves that Michael Caine is still a badass. When a group of local hooligans rob Harry of his best friend, he decides to set things right. Using his training as a soldier, he declares war on the ignorant criminal youth of the world. The police are helpless, as Brown mows down the English criminals. Taking many cues from the works of Michael Winner, Michael Caine comes to life with a fire unseen since his work in the 1970s. As the film wasn’t released in America until April 2010, it’s still in contention for Oscar recognition for the upcoming season. If there is a film-watching deity left, I would love to see Caine getting an Oscar nomination for his senior soldier. Out of all the titles covered this week, if you have to blind buy/watch one film…make it Harry Brown.
