Lost: The Complete Sixth Season marked the finale to one of the most important television shows of the decade. The problem with this assessment is that it started off as an amazing show. Then, it turned into a countdown for what would be one of the biggest mind-blowing finales ever. Finally, we received the last season. Episodes were rushed or they didn’t push the story forward past a snail’s pace. Not enough Jackface. Too much Kate. Terry O’ Quinn and Michael Emerson blowing everybody off the map with their talent. If that wasn’t enough, there’s the ending. That ending with its mystical pseudo-science attempt to explain away Faraday’s work and its real-world impact. The only way it could’ve pissed off people more would’ve been with an abrupt fade to black. I’m a Lost fan, I’ve been since the pilot. However, I felt like puking a little when hearing the commentaries on these episodes. These people were so in love with every little character fart, that they couldn’t see they were treading water for half the season.

  • The Simpsons: The Complete Thirteenth Season stretches from Mr. Burns getting some young ass to the terrible Gump Roast. There’s still the great Public Domain anthology, the pot episode with Phish and the Lisa Buddhist Christmas episode. But, it’s hard to argue that this season wasn’t another part of the franchise’s decline. Little to no direction coupled with lackluster voice acting turned several enjoyable episodes into more fodder for the Jeff Albertsons of the world. However, I can’t completely write off the show. There’s still moments this season that each fan will remember fondly, it’s just that no one’s going to claim any all-time favorites out of the bunch.

    Time Bandits
is a film that I’ve followed for as long as I can remember. Somewhere around the age of 4, I found a Marvel Comics adaptation of the film. The first time I saw the flick was on the now defunct Spotlight premium cable channel. There’s plenty to love. The Pythons, Dwarves, David Warner, Grecian King James Bond and Mona Robinson were in one film. That shit was like The Expendables to my sugar addled brain. Image Entertainment has managed to get the rights to the Blu-Ray away from the folks at Criterion. While it’s nice that Image has taken an older Optimum transfer and put it out on 1080p HD in Region 1, it could’ve been better. The grain and noise feels a bit much at times, while the audio track never really makes for an expressive soundstage. Still, it’s better than the last DVD.

Shogun Assassin has seemingly kept AnimEigo afloat during those rough patches. I know that a lot of people aren’t familiar with the little Asian tinged Home Video Distributor, but these guys are quickly filling that hole in my heart that Anchor Bay left. I’ve covered the original Japanese versions of the Lone Wolf and Cub series. I’ve covered the english dubs and various edits. Now, we get the best English edit of those classic films. The score is the stuff of cult legend, while we have Tarantino to thank for bringing the film back into geek consciousness. If you haven’t seen it before, words can barely describe what you’re going to witness. If you end up liking this flick, I’d recommend checking out the original Japanese versions.
