Meir Zarchi’s 1978 sexualassultspolitation “masterpiece” is that rare grindhouse film that managed to become a larger cult icon, even with so many unwilling to watch it. The excruciatingly simple plot (rape, repeat x3, revenge, repeat x3) paired with the relatively graphic depths the film is willing to sink to, has made it truly infamous. And while there are more graphic and more interesting films on the same subject*, I Spit On Your Grave has remained one of the go-to examples when one searches for an example of a depraved, fucked up film.
I’m not sure what purpose is served by remaking the film with as much fidelity to the source as the new Anchor Bay production seems to, but here now is the trailer for it.
Yep, that’s I Spit On Your Grave. Bigger budget, modern gore and cinematography, but that’s I Spit On Your Grave.
There was word that the production would be trying to circumvent the MPAA by working directly with theater chains to distribute the film unrated (which this trailer advertises) but it’s also being listed as an R-rated film in many places. I’m sure things will become more clear as we approach its release on October 8th and find out how many screens will be hosting what promises to be the most leg-clenchingly nasty mutilation this side of Antichrist.
*Thriller: A Cruel Picture (or They Call Her One Eye) would probably overshadow I Spit On Your Grave if it were more widely available, and didn’t turn into a pile of shit in the last 25 minutes.
