UPDATED: Bloody Disgusting spoke to writer Patrick Melton who stated that the ideas that Betsy mentioned were already rolled into Saw 3D, which will be it for the series. So for the moment, consider the franchise kaput.

…good news! There could be an eighth Saw film!
What’s funny is that I had no idea there was a chance of there not being a Saw VIII –I pretty much assumed they were greenlit through Saw X— but it seems Saw 3D was produced and shot as if it was the last of the franchise (until the reboot of course). Pop Wrap (a New York Post outfit) spoke with Betsy Russell (Jigsaw’s wife!? I checked out after II) who feels another film could still be in the cards if the audience is there. Despite the eventual intentions of finality, the writers apparently have more-
“Before we thought it was ending [at VII], the writers came up with an unbelievable idea… It’s an amazing story that I would love to see.”
So the franchise is over, unless the returns are good enough. Considering the majority of the previous Saw films were put into motion before their immediate predecessor was even released, this is definitely a new approach for Jigsaw’s saga.
On that note, I leave you with Ms. Russell’s other quote, which speaks for itself.
“We want to end near the top, with our integrity in tact and not letting the characters die a slow death, so to speak. But I believe in my heart that someday, somehow, [Saw VIII] will happen.”
