Kick-Ass was

a fun comic adaptation that received too much fellating around this site and other movie news depots. Tons of advance screenings, promos and the various trappings that come with pimping a genre film can only help to cloud opinions. Four months later, I’ve rewatched the film with clearer eyes. While I like aspects of the original Romita/Millar comic better than the film, I can respect what the actors bring to the mix. Nicolas Cage is reclaiming his moniker of weird fuck actor back from Crispin Glover. Then, there’s the matter of little Miss Chloe Moretz. This girl is becoming something than a Breslin or a Fanning. She reminds us that you can still be a working kid actor and enjoy what you’re doing.

THE GHOST WRITER

Special Features

  • Interview with Roman Polanski
  • The Cast of The Ghost Writer
  • The Ghost Writer: Fiction or Reality?: an interview with author Robert Harris

The Ghost Writer shows the world that Roman Polanski can still make films while evading the American legal system. This film is an adaptation of the Thomas Harris novel about a ghost writer helping a pseudo Tony Blair to write his memoirs. Sporting one of the stronger supporting casts in a Polanski film, the once and future nosecutter shows that he can still craft a mystery. My only problem with the film is that McGregor acts circles around Brosnan. While I do appreciate Pierce Brosnan and his limited range, he just isn’t the kind of guy that can share a screen with Ewan McGregor. It’s not like watching Anakin and Obi-Wan hanging out in the United Kingdom. But, it’s not far off.

Escape from New York has
finally arrived on Blu-Ray. The new transfer is a VC-1 encode that showcases the film in near pristine conditions. I know that some of you still have memories of that shitty Escape from L.A. Blu-Ray from a few months ago. Well, this disc sports a clean transfer and a robust audio track. However, all of the special features are ports over from the last Special Edition DVD. While you’re looking for this title on Tuesday, check out the other cult MGM titles hitting Blu-Ray for the first time. I’m talking about Blood Simple, people. I held off on that title, because I haven’t had the chance to find out if it is the true theatrical cut.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is one of those odd family flicks that I had people pushing on me. Greg, Rowley and Angie are a trio of kids for the ADD age. None of these characters sport charming personalities and they make no effort to be endearing. But, they are real kids who are self-obsessed peons trying to do their best to make it through the day. Greg continues to steal the show as this status obsessed kid who is willing to do anything to advance. Almost serving as a parody of the clueless adults in his life, Greg becomes an enjoyable little shit. While FOX has quickly rushed a sequel into production, I have to hope that they don’t lose the slight edge shown in this film. Any film that is anti-Kids Rule is fine by me.
