The biggest news for fighting game fans at Comic Con last weekend was
certainly the announcement than Capcom and Namco Bandai were teaming up
to face two of their biggest franchises against each other in not one,
but two games.
Street Fighter X
Tekken will be the first, and
feature Tekken characters fighting in the Street Fighter world. As you can see from these screenshots it’s
based on the Street Fighter IV
engine, and will feature two on two Tag Team battles.
“This
is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivaled
each other are finally standing on the same stage,” said
Yoshinori Ono, “Street Fighter IV” series producer,
Capcom. “This isn’t just a showdown between TEKKEN
and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and NBGI, so
I’m going to give it my all.”
No word on a release date, although a playable demo was shown at the Con, so it shouldn’t be too long. The game will be available for both Xbox 360 and PS3. Coming up soon afterwards will be Tekken
X Street Fighter, a quite different game, giving Street Fighter characters a Tekken makeover.
“The ultimate
dream match-up is
about to be realized. With this astonishing
collaboration, a new
chapter in fighting game history
begins,” said Katsuhiro Harada,
“TEKKEN”
series director, NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc. “The
Street Fighter
and TEKKEN development teams have a great
relationship. However, I see
this new project not as a
collaboration, but as a competition of the
century between two
legendary fighting game franchises.”
It will certainly be interesting to see how balanced the games are, especially since all the characters are supposed to have their trademark moves and combos. With this and Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 on the way, it’s going to be a good year for crossover fighting fans. More as we hear it!
