IGN has word that Robert Rodriguez says the prospects for a Predators 2
looks good after the first one has performed reasonably well both
domestically and overseas: “[The studio] said, ‘Let’s do some other ones. What other story ideas
do you have?'” says the filmmaker. “Because it was like, let’s test out
the market with this one. They really wanted it to be pretty contained,
pretty scaled-back. They didn’t want to put too many of the ideas into
it that we could save for a second one. So we could see what the
appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes
following that. That kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and
world, and then you can really go crazy from there.”
Rodriguez also says that the approach he’ll probably take is to listen to pitches from writers and select the best one. He said he could possibly direct the sequel, once he finishes with Sin City 2…so, in other words, probably not. I saw the film and thought it was a fairly solid, if unspectacular entry. I’d love it if, for the follow-up, they could tie it in with Predator 2 some kind of way. You know, like maybe have Danny Glover involved, or even both halves of Gary Busey put in a cameo or something. Exploring the government’s angle on the whole thing could prove interesting.
As for Adrien Brody and Alice Braga, they were fine and I wouldn’t mind seeing them back either, but they don’t necessarily have to be shoe-horned in if there’s a better story to be served. Now that the franchise has been re-established, I’d love to see the history of the Predators expanded. To date, the films have been largely anthological, with minor references in between them. Something that could allow the entire mythology to cohere would be very welcome. Hell, there’s even some stuff to possibly be mined from the two AVP (apologies for mentioning them here) films. Just change it up a bit, maybe bring it all together, make it big, and I’m there.
Thanks to Felix for the tip.
