Every movie is becoming 3D. It’s just the way it is. Right?
Maybe not for long. Zack Snyder tells MTV that he’s reconsidering a 3D post-conversion for his next film, Sucker Punch.
“We’ve looked at a bunch of conversions, so whether or not we have the time to do it right — I’m not going to do it if we don’t have the time to really be meticulous with it,” he said. “It’s such an awesome piece of work and everyone’s worked so hard to make it awesome, so I don’t want to screw it up with bad 3-D.”
“There are very few vendors out there that are doing [conversions],” added Snyder’s wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder. “There are all these movies that want to be converted and we just haven’t felt like we’ve seen that proof yet. Visually, Zack’s done an amazing job. It’s such a spectacle in and of itself and it’s so fantastical that it doesn’t really need the 3-D.”
I was on the set of the film, and while I’m embargoed up the wazoo, I can tell you that Debbie isn’t just blowing smoke. I don’t know what Zack’s first original screenplay will turn out to be like, but from a visual standpoint, Sucker Punch is a whopper. This movie is going to have trailers that will be so diverse and weird and awesome you’re not sure what to make of it. There’s so much going on in Sucker Punch – from giant mechs to Clockwork Nazis to musical numbers – that I don’t think this movie needs 3D. And I suspect that the dimming effect of the process will only hurt it.
So here’s hoping that Snyder stands strong and doesn’t make Sucker Punch a 3D picture.
