About the only way I could have possibly seen Mamma Mia! is the way that I actually did see it: coming home on a 12-hour trans-Atlantic flight. When you’re cramped in coach for half a day, you’ll watch anything that takes your mind off of it. My one sentence review? The entire movie is a celebration of Streep’s Donna having been a total ho some 20 years prior…set to ABBA. But apparently that worked for Streep, as she’s in talks to reteam with director Phyllida Lloyd for Iron Lady, a biopic about former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. Also in talks to join her as Thatcher’s husband, Denis, is Jim Broadbent. Pathe and Film4 are producing.
The film is set in 1982 and tracks Thatcher as she tries to save
her career in the 17 days preceding the 1982 Falklands War. The 2
1/2-month war was a turning point for the prime minister, who,
after the victory, saw her approval ratings double and went on to
win a second term. “Lady” is based on a script by Abi Morgan and, as described by
Pathe, “tells the story of a woman who smashed through the barriers
of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The
story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a
surprising and insightful portrait of an extraordinary and complex
woman.”
Streep was most recently heard in The Fantastic Mr. Fox and seen in It’s Complicated and Julie and Julia, the latter of which garnered her her millionth Oscar nod. She’s also rumored to appear in The Ice At The Bottom Of The World, a screenplay by Mark Richard (Stop-Loss); and also will lend her voice to Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life.
