A couple of months ago I saw Pee-Wee Herman’s stage show at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, and I had nosebleed seats all the way up in the balcony (sue me, I’m cheap). Sitting not six seats away in my aisle was comedy writer and Inglorious Basterd Paul Rust. Now Rust has a much better seat to the Pee-Wee show – he’s helping Paul Reubens write a film to be produced by Judd Apatow.
It’s being described as a big road trip adventure picture… which kind of sounds like Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. Could it actually be the Pee-Wee in Puppetland movie that Reubens has been talking about for years now? I’d much prefer that than another movie where Pee-Wee is running around the regular world.
“Let’s face it, the world needs more Pee-wee Herman,” Apatow told Daily Variety. “I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens — who is an extraordinary and groundbreaking actor and writer. It’s so great to watch him return with such relevance.”
It has been a good year for Pee-Wee, who had been on ice for years after Reubens got caught jerking it in a Florida porn theater (the perils of being famous before the internet). His show is going on to New York soon, and it was a huge hit here in LA. I, for one, am happy that Pee-Wee is back in the playhouse.
