The nature of the modern movie
junket! You sit down with one of the most fascinating, primal and
talented actors of the day and you ask him about… his next movie.
Well, it’s what we, the people, want to hear. Not that many folks are
interested in Tom Hardy’s method, but they are very interested in Mad Max:
Fury Road.

Collider
and MTV both talked to Hardy and got some info from him. Collider
found out that Fury Road is, in fact, a reboot of the Mad Max films,
not a sequel or continuation or prequel. “An entire restructuring,” is how he describes it. “That’s
not to say that it’s not picking up or leaving off from the
Mad Max you know already, but it’s a nice re-take on the
entire world using the same character, depositing him in the same world
but bringing him up to date by 30 years.”

MTV found out less of interest. “I
think what you’ll find with George [Miller] at the helm is that it will
probably be much more close to the human story of the man as opposed to
something which is going to be a shocking movie without any substance.”

Back to Collider – they had Hardy
allay some fears about Fury Road being a 300-style green-screen fest. “You
can expect the same amount of grit and rawness and authenticity and
performance, I hope to deliver. But that’s really the crux of
me and George to deliver and all the other actors as the other
characters. But also we have the new world afforded to filmmakers today
with all the opportunities. I think the boys that did Lord of the Rings
are involved. That kind of stuff as well. CGI is not going to be
— I think it’s going to be much more about how you
deal with action. These things are going to be really there. Big rigs,
big explosions, big car crashes. Big violence, you know. It’s
going to actually happen as opposed to doing a 2D turned to 3D screen.
It’s going to be an adventure, let’s put it that
way. We’re shooting for a year.”

I
rewatched Bronson last night (after Inception,
where Hardy plays dream forger/impersonator Eames, my girlfriend wanted
to catch up on more of Hardy’s work), and it reminded me of just how
damn good
this guy is. He’s a major,
stunning talent, and he’s not afraid to have a little fun and to be a
little silly. I don’t know if he’s going to be able to bring that to Mad
Max, but I really like that about him.
