  • Green Zone proves that Paul Greengrass is Alan J. Pakula with a dose of epilepsy. It almost seems like Greengrass is the only director working in American film that gives a shit about the political thriller. For the old bastards that remember the 1970s, don’t you remember when every other film was about some government conspiracy to fuck over a plucky young hero? Hell, all we’ve had in terms of political thriller in recent memory was Eagle Eye. Shia doesn’t cut the same tense drama as a Damon, a Beatty or a Henry Thomas. I’d still recommend Green Zone to those of us that like to see Damon move outside of Bourne mold and into the dramatic areas in which he flourishes.

She’s Out of My League was one of those many March releases that seemed to develop a following. Much like How to Train Your Dragon, I was left bewildered by America’s fascination with Jay Baruchel. He stumbles through scenes, never develops his character and just seems to exist. He’s like Seth Rogen, minus the attempt to play dramatic in Funny People. The film works well with its cast of comedic support and the lovely Alice Eve. But, it never comes together. You have a lot of laughs and some usual mainstream pandering, but there’s a hint of something truly great under the surface. It’s a great rental, but I’d kick you in the junk for buying it.

    A Star is Born
was a revelation on Blu-Ray. I know that it’s not fashionable to show favor to a Judy Garland film on CHUD, but it’s been amazingly restored with DTS-HD audio and a clear 1080p transfer. If that’s not enough, you get James Mason in iconic drunken stupor. If I believed in a caucasian deity that spent his days judging me and my actions, I hope that the aforementioned deity would be James Mason. As you watch this nearly three hour film, you will watch as Garland does her schtick well. Sure, she’s got the baggage of being a gay icon…but, she can act and perform like few others. For the collectors out there, WB released this to Blu-Ray in one of those book-bound cases. If you’re like me, you’re probably OCD to the level of crippling depression. Fill that hole in your life with this material possession.

    REMEMBER ME

    Special Features

    • The Making of Remember Me
    • Audio Commentary w/ Director Allen Coulter
    • Audio Commentary w/Cast including Robert Pattinson

    Remember Me is
terrible in a mindblowing way. It’s like Allen Coulter wanted to take the worst elements of Ordinary People and then tried to CW them into something not meant to be seen on Earth. What’s more fucked up is that he got the hot girl from Lost, James Bond and Martha Plimpton to sign on for the project. There’s so much talent trying to make something of this love story that you almost want it to succeed. But, when it descends into melodramatic bullshit circa 2001…it becomes epic. When you can go so far off the scales that your pile of shit becomes gold, you’ve done something magical. You’re daring to approach the lands of Wood, Pyun and Warren. I’d recommend picking this up. Everyone needs to see the new standard of a bad romance.
