Last week there was a
kerfuffle in the Chinese media about Red Dawn when someone over there got wind
of the fact that the baddies will be good old ChiComs. Considering that
China has a propaganda movie, The Karate Kid, hitting
theaters this weekend they shouldn’t be so offended. And maybe if they
stopped being a totalitarian police state they wouldn’t get treated so
badly by the media.
But at any rate their problems with Red Dawn may
be evaporating… along with MGM. According
to the LA Times the film,
originally scheduled to be released this November, has disappeared into
the Siberia of TBA – to be announced. No one knows when, or if, the
film will be released.
This all comes on the heels of the
continuing meltdown of MGM. The situation is so bad that the next 007
movie has been delayed indefinitely and Guillermo del Toro has been
forced off The Hobbit, which can’t start production
until the studio’s financials get back in order. Or someone buys them.
Other
movies sit in the danger zone, including Drew Goddard’s Cabin in
the Woods,
which was all ready to go but then held back a year to be
post-converted into 3D. If the studio can’t even get enough funds to
release Red Dawn,
which looks to be very commercial, what hope is there for the weird and
meta Cabin?
I
attempted to get a comment from MGM but didn’t hear back at the time of
publication.
