Avatar still isn’t a very good movie, but it shouldn’t inspire tirades of cinematic anger. Cameron’s done better, but that’s still not the point. The point is that it’s nothing more than a Merian C. Cooper flick ran through a Cray computer. If you’re looking to watch the film in 3-D, that’s not going to be on this disc. Hell, you’re not even going to get a commentary or a featurette. It’s bare-bones. So, wait for something better. That is if you can wait.

THE LOVELY BONES

  • A giant three hour supplemental documentary

The Lovely Bones is an interesting failure that is propped up by Stanley Tucci’s amazing performance. Alice Sebold’s novel wasn’t that amazing, but it allowed Jackson some room to play with the supernatural. I love how he’s able to capture Mark Wahlberg’s love for his daughter while getting that vengeful streak down pat. Honestly, I’m willing to watch anything by Jackson that doesn’t feature a fucking Hobbit or King Kong. Give the film a shot on Tuesday. If you hate it, you hate it. It could’ve been worse. Andy Serkis could’ve motion captured Susan Sarandon’s performance as the grandmother.

The Young Victoria was a film that snuck up on me. I’m a huge British history fan and it was nice to see the early years of Queen Victoria portrayed in modern cinema. Too often are we shown the effects of her reign or the Queen as some old warthog bitch. When you’re given a chance to see leaders in their youth, it opens up something amazing to be seen. Humanizing the out-of-reach has been a proud film tradition, especially when it comes to our leaders. But, there’s no bullshit with Emily Blunt’s performance. You buy here as a woman first and as the Queen second.

CRAZY HEART

  • Deleted Scenes

Jeff Bridges finally got an Oscar for impersonating David Allan Coe. I like how FOX aggressively tried to push these movie onto more screens, but it still seems like it went unwatched. Robert Duvall’s performance invokes memories of Tender Mercies, but I have to say that this is the better film. Bridges has a quiet anger/regret about him. When you see his scenes with Farrell, it’s almost too much. Being a younger man, I can’t attest to the pain of the elderly subset. But, it has to be aggravating to live so long that you see everyone become better than you. Just a constant stream of people looking better, having more and feeling better. If you’re over the age of 50 and watch this movie alone, please don’t kill yourself.
