Pee Wee Herman’s back. Paul Reubens has dusted off that ill-fitting gray suit and is performing live in Los Angeles in the coming weeks. He earned some harsh feelings when he canceled sold out shows at a more intimate venue to move to the humongous Nokia Theater at the Staples Center, but he’s still selling tickets.
And he hopes to be selling tickets to movies soon. Talking to MTV Movies Blog, Reubens says he has finished a script for Pee Wee’s Playhouse: The Movie, which wouldn’t be tied into any of the previous Pee Wee films but rather launch from the TV series.
“It’s not really the real world, it’s Puppetland. On ‘Pee Wee’s Playhouse,’ on the television series we never left the playhouse, we were always inside the playhouse.”
“The movie is all out of the playhouse,” he revealed. “There are two scenes in the playhouse, but the rest is out of the playhouse.”
So it’s Pee Wee exploring the world in which the Pee Wee’s Playhouse show was set. Reubens says the script is completely, totally done, and you know that he’s hoping playing to a big LA audience will get someone in the crowd willing to pony up the money to make the film. With his dangerous jerking off offenses behind him, Pee Wee might very well be on the road back to stardom.
