Recently Chris Weitz told MovieMaker Magazine that he might retire after his post-New Moon movie. While that could be a blessing for all of us (said only after enduring New Moon, which has all but obliterated About A Boy from my mind), a beyond-stellar opening weekend seems to have given Director Weitz another lease on life.
So his next film, The Gardener, won’t be his last. But it could be his Oscar-baitiest. According to Variety, The picture is about a hard-working immigrant who lives in Los Angeles and his efforts to protect his son. And according to Weitz, “There are no werewolves or vampires, just a Mexican gardener in Los Angeles.” So the most terrible monster of them all!
Mr. Beaks over at Ain’t It Cool surmises that this could be a veritable remake of The Bicycle Thieves; I’m just sitting here having my ‘pandering white people’ sensors going crazy. We’ll see.
In the meantime I’m going to try and shrug off my New Moon anger and get back to where I felt about Weitz after he got raped on The Golden Compass. This will take some time, though.
Try and convince me you’ve seen The Bicycle Thieves on our message boards.
