Z is Costas-Gavras’s masterpiece. Showing such flair towards capturing the true nature of conspiracy on camera is near impossible. But, you learn to feel Jean-Louis Trintignant’s disgust and despair towards his government. The clever cinematography opens up new angles, as we see a real world view of political violence. Anything can happen in Gavras’s Greece and we’re caught on the sidelines watching it. The transfer on this Criterion disc is a marked improvement over the previous DVD release.

Black Devil Doll is the cult film to beat this year. A young lady accidentally uses a Ouija board to raise a slain Black militant from the dead. The resurrected soul possesses a ventriloquist’s dummy and the murder spree begins. Mubia is one of the greatest killer dolls to ever grace the silver screen. Hopefully, you can find room in your Halloween film schedule to watch him stick to the man…and a lot of white chicks.
