I’ve been writing ‘Duchovny/Anderson/Carter talks about a possible new X-Files film’ for the last decade. And once a new X-Files film happened, stunk and bombed, I thought I was forever done with the topic.
But they keep pulling me back in.
In an interview with The Daily Beast for his latest show, Californication, Duchovny talks about his hopes for a third theatrical adventure for Mulder and Scully. “As far as the X-Files movie I’d like to do next, if we get a
chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the
mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy. I think it’s natural
for The X-Files to have another movie in 2012, so we’ll see if we get to do it.”
The show did establish 2012 as the alien invasion year – Mulder had visions of a major attack – but even if Fox were to bring the characters back for another go round, could they get the budget to make the big film the topic demands? The X-Files: I Want to Believe was a cheap, shitty looking movie, and if there were to be a third, it would have to be a real movie. With big scenes and big effects and stuff to put in the trailer that isn’t just people walking in the snow.
I don’t see it happening, but then again I didn’t see The X-Files: I Want to Believe happening, either.
