Monsoon Wedding is why I can’t hate Mira Nair for dropping cinematic fecal logs such as Amelia or Vanity Fair. Nair has such an eye for little details that just doesn’t translate into her America work. Watching her play around with the India of her youth opens up such a wonderful cinematic experience. Family life is the same on every continent, as outside stress can make loved ones snap on each other at a moment’s notice. But, there is comedy to be had in the awkwardness of walking on eggshells around relatives.
