Black Dynamite is finally coming to theatres on October 16th. Finally. It’s been damn near a year since the trailer premiered and knocked me on my ass. I’ve been waiting with anticipation on news about the cat that wears a hundred dollar suit and drives a five thousand dollar car and now, almost a year later, it’s finally here. The Michael Jai White Blaxploitation spoof which, when I first saw it, I thought was some jive ’70s movie that I missed in my youth, will be distributed by Apparition, according to Variety. Apparition is a new domestic distribution company that will release some sizable films this year including Jane Campion’s Bright Star; Terence Malick’s The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt; and The Young Victoria, which stars Emily Blunt.
Dynamite premiered at Sundance and won the Seattle Film Fest’s audience award and also played at CineVegas and Tribeca. Directed by Scott Sanders and co-written by White and co-star Byron Minns, it’s a very authentic-looking homage that fully embraces the feel of the period, including the fun credits sequence. I haven’t wanted to see Captain Kangaroo this much since I was a tyke, that’s for certain. “Both Scott and Michael really know every film in the (blaxploitation)
genre and every little detail,” said [Apparition honcho Bob] Berney, who saw the film at
Sundance and has been following it while building his new distribution
company. “Even the strangest stuff in the film has been seen or done in
those films. It’s a sort of Austin Powers period comedy that appeals
to younger audiences.”
If you haven’t seen the trailer, then for Pete’s sake, check it out below (NSFW). Also, make sure to avail yourself of Alex’s review here.
