Incredible Hulk director Louis Letterier has one more film in his contract at Marvel Studios, and he really really wants them to bring him back for it. Talking to the LA Times from the set of his new film, Clash of the Titans, Letterier waxed geektastic about the upcoming Marvel movies, as well as his own utterly unlikely dream project.
He tells the paper that he’s seen some of the concept art for Captain America: The First Avenger, and he’s been blown away. ‘It’s a period piece and it’s like “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and with more gadgets…it’s “Raiders” meets “Rocketeer” and “Saving Private Ryan.” It’s going to be so cool.’
The Rocketeer part makes a lot of sense since Cap director Joe Johnston helmed that underappreciated period superhero movie.
As for what Letterier would like to do next: he’d like to team up with the other Marvel Studios directors and make a four part Avengers movie.
We do four movies. We release them one a month for the summer. Or even
every two weeks or three weeks. And the whole summer would be Avengers
summer. So we do it the way they make television shows. One story arc
but told in installments by different directors. So all of the
directors that touch part of the Avengers world would do a part; we
could make the movies shorter, maybe less than an hour and a half, and
we use the same sets and save Marvel money. I would love to sit around
a table with all of them a kick around the story. That’s my dream.
His dream seems really unattainable – first of all, who wants to pay full price for a movie that’s less than feature length (and these would be full price, make no mistake) – but then again, I was the guy who said a few years ago that a shared Marvel Cinematic Universe would never happen. At this point I wouldn’t put anything past Kevin Feige and his band of maniacs. As the LA Times points out, a huge four movie event could be a great way to tell the epic Kree-Skrull War storyline. I’d go see the shit out of that.
