Push comes to DVD with the fanfare usually reserved for nothing. Paul McGuigan had previously helmed Wicker Park and Lucky Number Slevin. Both are criminally underrated films that show off an amazing eye and a sense of narrative. McGuigan tries to branch a little further out with the genre fare this time and the result is an interesting mess. Breaking down powers into more class systems than necessary, something is created that is more than the X-Men clone that it was perceived to be.
The film suffers from a cast that is criminally unbalanced. Djimon Hounsou is credible actor that is virtually playing the same role that Samuel L. Jackson did in Jumper. Chris Evans, Camille Belle and Dakota Fanning work their asses off in this flick, but it doesn’t matter. Nobody goes to see a movie because of those three. Hell, a lot of people are hard-pressed to spot the first two actors in a line-up. Check it out on Tuesday. It’s a decent film that should’ve done a little better than it did.

Knowing and its financial success is proof that America needs to marry outside of its borders. The country is rapidly becoming this big retarded monster that threatens to eat the wallpaper. Nicolas Cage stars as a professor whose son has discovered this evil codex buried in a time capsule. The device contains a numerical sequence that reveals when all the great disasters are bound to happen. Determined to save hypothetical lives, Cage sets out to fight the future with his amazing hair. Somewhere, director Alex Proyas tries to find his credibility.

- Both Cuts of the Film
I’m really tired of the PG-13 supernatural suspense film. You can’t call a movie that isn’t R horror unless it was forged in the Dark Times prior to 1968. This film is a gross mockery of the demonic possession genre. Especially, when your big bad is named Jumby. It sounds like he should be a little clay piece of green shit that hangs out with a red horse and teaches children Pseudo-Lutheran values.
Then, there’s Odette Yustman. America has some words for you, Miss Yustman. Tits or get the fuck out. Gary Oldman also shows up as a demon-fighting rabbi. Why the film wasn’t sold on that point is beyond me.
OBSESSIVE DVD NERDS, I BESEECH YOU!
The
Chewer Nation likes to make long-winded lists that can turn even the
strongest mind into an Autistic pile of mush. Therefore, I beseech you
to make a list for the month of July! I want to see the worst DVDs ever
made. List them, provide reasons and do what you will. I know that I
can harness your collective mental spark plugs to inspire some modicum
of film discussion.
I’ll start.
1) Colossus: The Forbin Project
2) The Enforcer – Dragon Dynasty (via Reggie-Wanker)
A reissue (with a few bonus features) of the cut, dubbed-only Dimension
version of MY FATHER IS A HERO starring Jet Li… but still cut and
still dubbed-only. This is where Dragon Dynasty finally stopped
pretending to give a shit, grabbed their nuts with one hand, and
flipped off their customer base with the other. The ending of the
betrayal that began in earnest with their reissue of the cut Dimension
version of SUPERCOP with the Cantonese soundtrack edited down to match
their fucked up version of the film. Even the label’s most
simple-minded, idiotic defenders couldn’t justify this new old
direction.
