For videogame trailers, gameplay usually is key. Sure, there’s the bunch of commercials and trailers that manage to amaze and stun and not give you any clue of what the game actually looks like, but it’s got to have a hook. The recent Modern Warfare 2 teaser is the best recent example. It didn’t even show you a full image, let alone gameplay, yet made you interested to see where the story was going.
This Assassin’s Creed 2 teaser does not.
Unless you’re a hardcore Creed devotee you won’t get anything out of this. Unless the wings at the end are a hint of a new feature…
Course, there’s also the fact that the story in Assassin’s Creed was one of its worst parts… besides, of course, the ridiculous amount of repetition. Sure the concept of the plot was decent but you really didn’t care about any of the characters, and the cliffhanger ending didn’t make any new fans.
Assassin’s Creed 2 could easily be incredible, but they really need to give us some variety. Climbing buildings and structures has not been done as well in a videogame yet, but the fact that you basically kept repeating a half hour of gameplay over and over and over really killed the game. You know, the “go to a new location, climb to the top of the tallest buildings to see the layout, pickpocket people, eavesdrop, save victims, and then go assassinate a target” thing that was given to you ad nauseum, never changing up once or giving you a new challenge. The mechanics are fantastic and it’s a blast just to explore the world but they really need to work on giving you more missions and things to do. And I don’t mean more goddamn flags to find.
Let’s hope the next trailer shows something more substantial. There are more hints to the story on the official site, if you can be bothered.
